Oh deer, It's hard to believe that we are turning the corner in winter as I watch the herd munching outside at the feeder. After a great Holiday Christmas Party here at the Sanctuary and some great art classes and Kinderkapers programs we are starting to prepare for a record breaking 23rd year of Nature Camps.
Now is a great time to get out for a while along our trails which have been maintained. The areas where wetlands and trails meet have been raised with stone and wood chips, keeping those hiking boots nice and dry.
The house got a fresh coat of paint this fall and looks fantastic. We have made very good use of our remodeled kitchen and have hosted several meetings and luncheons over the winter.
We will be continuing the Kindercapers programs which work along with area schools in the area of science. Programs will be starting January 7th and there will be a session every Thursday of the month from 2-4 p.m.. Cost is $90 per month. Give me a call at 908-4391201 to discuss programs or even have your child’s Birthday Party Here at the Sanctuary before camps start up again June.

****New for Winter*******Kindergarten Kapers!2009-2010Short and cold days; longer and colder nights. It’s a special season to learn how animals and plants survive the winter, and discover who hibernates, who migrates, who changes diets, and who stays active in the cold climate. The turn of the seasons is a fascinating time to see Nature at work. Yellow-red leaves fall to the ground, animals leave tracks in snow, buds force up through frosty soil, the world bursts into primary colors, and then it all starts over again. Kindergarten-aged children learn about one of the greatest cycles of life as hands-on activities and crafts show how and why these changes occur, and how plants and animals, and even themselves, grow and change in response to cycles of the seasons. Four sessions in each of three Seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring) follow a similar format: Session 1: What happens during this season? How do plants change/adapt during this season? Session 2: How do terrestrial birds and mammals change/adapt during this season? Session 3: How does aquatic life change/adapt during this season? Session 4: How do insects change/adapt to this season? How do people change and what can we do to help all the other creatures adapt to the changes? A zippy hands-on nature series for budding kindergartners on the cycles and changes of the seasons… Presented by The Roving Nature Center Hosted by the Whittemore Wildlife Sanctuary, Oldwick, NJ T $90 per season. Limit: 10 kindergarten-aged children.
