June 21-25 and July 19-23 9:30-Noon Ages 4-6 Enchanted Troll Valley Bramble the Troll guides us through Enchanted Troll Valley, where many fascinating mysteries await. We'll use special tools to find the Hidden Ones, see Animal Beginnings, learn some of the Songs of the Forest, and even discover the trolls' hidden treasure called the "Wasm," and how important it is to all Living Things. Among the special gifts found and unearthed are Semi-precious stones given to each participant. 1-3:30 PM Ages 6-11 Adventures of the Dynamic Discovery Team The mockingbird calls and adventure awaits! Join the Dynamic Discovery Team for endless hours of excitement; discover how Nature's many helpers work to keep it in balance. As a member of this elite team, you'll participate in a Connector-Detector training course to unravel the secret of the Web of Life. As a Munch-Line Monitor, you'll be the watchdog of the food chain. Your adventures will take you on Treetop Safari, Meadow Maneuvers, and Breathtaking Brooksnooping. You will make a pocket sundial to tell time by the sun and use water to make a magnifying lens. Answer the call of the mockingbird and join the Dynamic Discovery Team! June 28-July 2 and July 26-30 9:30-Noon Ages 4-6 Jaws, Claws, Talons and Paws Many predators have special weapons that help them catch, kill, and eat their prey. Wolves and jaguars use their strong jaws and long teeth. Hawks and owls have no teeth, but they do have powerful sharp talons on their feet. We'll discover the tools of the trade of these more fearsome and fierce animals by examining the features and techniques of special predators: the speedy sprinters, fast flappers, long leapers, heavyweight champs, and those ever-popular predators of the past, the meat-eating dinosaurs: Join us for this exciting prowl about the park. 1-3:30 PM Ages 6-11 Earth Watch Patrol The Earth is a fascinating place to live! And that's good, because everything that's alive lives here! During this special week of outdoor adventures, we'll examine the water, land, and sky to discover many of the creatures who call Earth home, and how they depend on its abundant and diverse resources. We'll then investigate ways we can conserve resources, restore habitats, lessen harmful effects, and keep our Earth alive and well. July 5-9 and August 2-6 9:30-Noon Ages 4-6 Who Goes There in the Night? Many animals are active only at night. So how do we know if they live in our parks? The clues they leave are plentiful. Each day will include a scavenger hunt where participants will follow a mysterious set of clues which will lead them to different animal homes. We'll use our senses, follow tracks, and develop our own game board of clues to discover "Who Goes There?" 1-3:30 PM Ages 6-11 Junior Naturalists Outdoor Society: 2010 To the outdoors! The whippoorwill calls, the linden tree beckons and the katydid points the way. Discoveries await! The Junior Naturalists Outdoor Society takes to the open trail in happy answer to the call. We are eye witnesses to a Forest Under Construction, Underwater Breathing, and Mineral Cookies in Process. We investigate migration maneuvers, habitat hideouts and creature features. We'll cast tracks in plaster, test for water quality, collect specimens for study and release, and revel in the wonder and abundance of the Great Outdoors! Junior Naturalists receive an Outdoor Society membership card and a Certificate of Outdoor Investigations. July 12-16 and August 9-13 9:30-Noon Ages 4-6 Roving Rangers-Stalking This Summer, the Roving Rangers are on Safari to discover the wildlife in the local park. But to find them, we brush up on stalking skills so we can walk on "little cat feet" to the very home of underground tunnelers, high-wire acrobats, and paddling pond-dwellers. To learn about how these animals are adapted to their homes, we will animate insects, mimic mammals and "brooksnoop" for hidden water life. Each Roving Ranger receives an official Nature Safari Certificate of Appreciation 1-3:30 PM Ages 6-11 Missing Species Mystery Though they didn't realize it at the time, pioneering Americans had a negative impact on wildlife as civilization grew and spread out across our country. For some it was too late, but fortunately for other animals we were able to put a value on our natural resources and bring some species back from the brink of extinction. Come join us in solving the Missing Species Mystery and as you do, learn how some real-life creatures become rare, threatened and endangered, and what we can do to help them.
